“Look. Up ahead is a bridge,” Parker said. “I knew there would be one soon. We’ll need to cross to get to the plains leading to Zuma. We’re probably not far.”

Quinn craned her neck, quickening her pace as the bridge came into view. “It’ll be best if the two of you miniatures are back to your normal sizes in case something happens as we cross,” she said. “A stiff breeze and you guys will float away like a kite.”

After returning Aven and Riley to their natural heights, the five of them made their way to the rope-and-wood footbridge stretched across the canyon’s fifty-foot gap. It was much farther down to the floor of the canyon than they’d anticipated.

“Well, definitely don’t look down,” Aven said.

“Are you sure this is the best bridge to take?” Owen asked. “Maybe there’s a better one further down.”

“The compass says this is it,” Quinn answered, leading the group over the first steps of the bridge.

Riley called out, “No. Wait. Do you hear something?”

A loud rumble came from the cavern.

“Is that thunder?” Aven asked, looking for the source of the noise.

“There’s not a cloud in the sky,” answered Parker. “I’m not sure what it is.”

“It’s probably nothing,” Quinn said, placing her other foot on the bridge, a noisy creak giving them all pause.

“We should wait,” Riley repeated. “Something’s not right.”

“I’m with the kid,” Owen said.

“I don’t see any other way across,” Quinn said, bending down to survey the ropes holding the bridge together. “But better to be safe. Give me a couple of minutes. I think I have an idea. Parker, do you still have the spool of rope?”

Parker handed the rope to her sister, who took it and pulled her goggles down over her eyes. Quinn pulled a small knife from her pocket and carefully cut the wooden spool into four parts. Her hands flew over the spool, threading the rope through the pieces, creating loops in the string where she attached the spool pieces. She unwound the entire length, marking three spots along the way to make four equal sizes.

The claps of thunder were more frequent and felt like they were getting closer.

Could that be Riley’s stomach? That kid asks about snacks every fifteen minutes. I wonder if being invisible makes you eat like crazy?

“This is a climbing rope,” Quinn said, standing back and admiring the knotted rope.

“Will this work better than your doughnut thingy?” Aven asked, tilting her head.

Quinn narrowed her eyes at her. “Owen, you, and Riley are in the middle. I’m going to tie these pieces of rope to you, and this way, we are all connected. Parker and I will be on the ends, and we’ll go slowly, so we don’t put too much weight on the bridge. Riley’s right. It looks… old.”

Once everyone was attached, Quinn carefully stepped onto the wooden bridge.

She checked the compass and confirmed it still pointed directly over the bridge.

“See, nothing to worry about,” Quinn said.

Aven, energized after eating the massive crumb, gave a hearty, “Let’s do it!” followed by her usual howl.
